(and nervous system) long after the relationship ended.
For years, I tried to “rebuild myself.”
I told myself — and everyone else — stories about who I was.
I swore I loved cooking from scratch.
Going out to the garden, picking tomatoes, making sauce like some romantic version of myself I thought I was supposed to be.
And then I left.
And I realized the truth:
I didn’t love cooking at all.
I loved being in the kitchen because it meant I didn’t have to be near him.
That was my first crack in the illusion.
But even years later, his texts, emails, and phone calls could still hijack me.
I’d spend hours ruminating.
Replaying conversations.
Rewriting responses in my head.
